We are called to treat all people with respect, compassion,
and justice. In Christ’s description of the Last Judgment, we
learn that when we ignore the poor, we ignore Christ himself.
. . . As Catholics, we can no longer tolerate the moral scandal of so much poverty in our land and so much hunger in our world. One-sixth of our children are growing up
poor in the richest nation on earth. More than 30,000
children die every day worldwide from hunger, deprivation,
and their consequences. Every Catholic is called to
join in the search for the moral values and virtues and for just policies and investments that will help people escape the trap of poverty. Many people are being left behind. Our faith calls us to
respond. Our nation needs it. Our world requires it. Our
salvation demands it. Hear the call and answer it.
