GOD’S INTERACTION WITH THE WORLD – II
We continue with the framing of the discussion.
3) The world and universe used to be commonly thought of as quite mechanical. This, of course, was compatible with the Deist’s image of God. The world was thought to act much as a machine.
This view was deeply challenged with the developing view of evolution. By the way, evolution is almost universally accepted by the scientific community. There are, though, different views about just how evolution takes place.
An even greater challenge was brought about by the advent of quantum-physics where reality is anything but mechanical.
This has brought us to the realization that our world and universe are a mixture of stability and flexibility. It is this mixture that makes creativity and growth possible. If all was stability, everything would remain rigidly the same. If all was flexibility, there would be chaos. Another aside. Much of the problem with society, both civil and religious, is that we need both for a healthy society. We must go deeper than conservative or liberal to learn how to develop both stability and flexibility with its fruitful creativity.
