RELIGION SUBSTITUTE FOR GOD – Science

Dear People Whom God Loves,
I am fascinated by science.  I wish that I knew much more than I do.  I am fascinated by the understanding of the evolution of our universe that science has brought to us.  Also, the evolution of our earth, the mystery of life bursting forth, the advent of consciousness.  The growth of our knowledge of the brain and the insights into the effect that the brain has on human behavior.  This also makes me see bad behavior from another perspective.

Science has made such magnificent advances that it is easy to be drawn into the thinking that science will answer all of our questions and that there is no meaning beyond what science tells us.

Science can tell us about the “big bang” and what followed from it.  Science cannot tell us why there was a big bang.  There is meaning it can’t reach.

We all die.  Is there meaning and hope in that?  Science tells us that our universe will end.  Either our universe will fly apart or it will collapse.  Is there hope or ultimate meaning for our universe?  Science is mute before this question.

A scientist certainly can find hope and meaning in life.  That will come from somewhere else.  In fact a scientist looking at the intricacies of our evolving universe might be drawn into a mystical state—there are little mystical states, medium ones, and extreme ones—of wonder, awe, meaning, purpose, and even of what we call God.  This, however, does not come from scientific reasoning.  That is why a great scientist may believe in God and another great scientist may not believe.
Smile, God Loves You,
Father Clay
