Dear People Whom God Loves,

We have looked at science and how it can (not necessarily) become a substitute for religion.  We now turn to the cult of culture which can (not necessarily) be a substitute for religion.  Examples are music and art.

Music and art have the power to enrich our lives and give us meaning and purpose.  I can understand why people devote their lives to music or art.  This can center their lives and give joy to them and to many others.  Indeed a wonderful way to live.

I love music—even though I am not very good at it.  Sometimes I will be listening to a particular piece and something deep inside me is moved.  I don’t know how to put it into words, but it is very real.

These are wonderful meanings and values, but they are not ultimate.  They do not give a response to our deepest concerns.  We know that we and everyone will die.  Science tells us that our universe will end.  We are still left with our deepest questions.  Is there ultimate meaning to life and to our universe?  Religion (when authentic), responds to these questions.  Music and art do not take the place of religion.

They can, however, move us into a deep awe, wonder, peace, and oneness that is truly spiritual.  But we must not mistake music and art for religion.
Smile, God Loves You,
Father Clay
